Chemka Hot Spring, also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs or, locally, Maji Moto (“hot water”), lies about 40 kilometers from Moshi and Weruweru River Lodge, roughly an hour to an hour and a half’s drive depending on road conditions. The name Chemka comes from the Swahili word for “boiling,” describing the way the water appears to bubble up from underground, even though the springs are only pleasantly warm rather than genuinely hot.

Fed by groundwater filtered through volcanic rock connected to Mount Kilimanjaro, the springs form a deep, constantly refreshed pool of crystal-clear, turquoise water surrounded by fig trees, palms, and acacias — a striking contrast to the dry savannah landscape around it. The final stretch of the drive is off-road, passing dry riverbeds, baobab trees, and traditional villages, which is very much part of the adventure.

  • A rare geological feature. Chemka is one of only a handful of places in East Africa where groundwater interacts directly with geothermal activity, producing a constantly circulating natural pool rather than a stagnant one.
  • The water is genuinely crystal clear, despite reaching depths of up to around 10 meters in places — you can usually see the bottom throughout the pool.
  • Shaded, jungle-like surroundings of fig and palm trees make it feel like a hidden oasis rather than a typical open-water swimming spot.
  • A classic post-Kilimanjaro recovery stop. Many climbers head here straight after descending the mountain to relax tired legs in the cool water.

Safety & Health Information

This excursion is designed to be a gentle, low-impact stroll along mostly flat agricultural paths, making it accessible for nearly every age group and fitness level. To ensure a comfortable experience, keep the following considerations in mind:

  • Deep water awareness. The pool reaches depths of approximately 10 meters in certain sections; those who are not confident swimmers should remain in the shallower areas near the bank and stay close to their companions.
  • No professional supervision. Please be aware that there are no lifeguards on-site. Visitors swim at their own discretion, and children must be supervised at all times.
  • Hydration and water safety. The spring water is unsuitable for consumption. We recommend bringing an adequate supply of bottled or filtered drinking water for your trip.
  • Adventurous road conditions. The final approach involves a rustic off-road track that may be dusty or muddy. Should you have concerns regarding the drive, our reception team is happy to assist.
  • Essential gear. Ensure you pack your swimwear and towels, as changing facilities at the oasis are quite basic.
  • Environmental protection. As this is a delicate natural ecosystem feeding into local rivers, please use biodegradable or reef-safe sunscreens whenever possible.
  • Slippery surfaces. Exercise caution when navigating the rocks and tree roots surrounding the water, as they can become treacherous when wet.
