Materuni Waterfall sits on the southern foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Materuni village, roughly 15 kilometers from Moshi town, about a 30 to 45 minute drive from Weruweru River Lodge. Locally the waterfall is also known as Nambe Waterfall, named for being the first waterfall descending from Kilimanjaro’s slopes, though it takes its common name from the village itself. Falling roughly 90 meters (some measurements put it higher), it is widely regarded as the tallest and most striking waterfall at the base of the mountain.

The tour typically pairs the waterfall with a stop at a Materuni coffee farm, where Chagga families grow, harvest, and roast coffee using traditional methods, before a scenic 40 to 45 minute guided hike through banana groves, coffee plantations, and rainforest down to the falls.

Why Choose the Marangu Cultural Tour

Choose this tour if you want a proper half-day hike with a rewarding swim at the end, combined with an authentic coffee and village experience — all without needing a full day away from the lodge. It’s a popular warm-up activity for guests preparing to climb Kilimanjaro (a good way to test fitness and acclimatize gently), and equally popular as a cool-down activity after a climb or long safari. Discover the specific elements that distinguish this excursion from any other.
