Indeed, Moshi is a small town in northern Tanzania, nestled on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest summit. Notably, the word “Moshi” itself means “smoke” in Swahili, the national language, aptly describing the circle of mist that often crowns Mount Kilimanjaro.
Historically, Moshi’s story began as a German military base in the late 19th century. Subsequently, the 1912 railway transformed it into a key East African coffee trading hub, capitalizing on the region’s rich volcanic soil. Moreover, British rule later brought an influx of Indian migrants, who established businesses and industries, creating a vibrant marketplace. Finally, Moshi officially became a town in 1956, cementing its role as a regional center.
Following independence in 1961, Moshi continued to grow, and its population is estimated to exceed 100,000. Although the coffee trade has now collapsed, other important industries have come to dominate, namely TPC Limited, an 8,000-hectare sugar plantation, Serengeti Breweries, a leading alcoholic brand, and Bonite Bottlers, which manufactures Coca-Cola products.
Furthermore, not forgetting that Moshi is now the second-largest tourism hub of Tanzania, attracting thousands of thrill-seekers and adventurers each year for trekking or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
